Name: White Heart Alternate Name(s): Cornaline d'Aleppo; Hudson Bay Bead Used by: Hudson Bay AC; others see below |
Derived from: White core. Resemblance to Aleppo stone, an agate used to ward off the Aleppo boil that left a red circle with interior pus. Sold by the Hudson Bay Company. |
Earliest Use: at least 1893 (see Ninni and Segatti 1991: 76). Established trade term by 1879 (Haldeman 1879: 269; therein Coralline d'Aleppo). Unknown |
Origin: Venetian from ca. 1830; also Czech and French. |
Distinctive Trait: Both wound and drawn; several varieties. |
Distribution: Global. |
Remarks: I prefer white heart because of yellow and green heart. Cornaline d'Aleppo is also acceptable. The HBC traded many beads. |
