These large (25 mm, one inch in diameter) clay objects come from a late phase of the Ban Chiang culture (ca.500 to 200 BC) in Thailand. At first it was thought that they were seals. Then it was suggested they were rollers for decorating cloth. The latest thinking is that they are amulets for children, since they are found mostly in children's graves.
