Nor is it a pendant. Made from a hard black rock (likely Lydian stone, a type of chalcedony or agate) this piece is 55 mm (2+ inches) long. It was likely worn, but only for convenience.

It was a touchstone, used to determine the relative amount of gold (and earlier the composition of bronze) in a given object. There are still streaks of gold on it.
