Just checking in folks, the Victorian Bead Ass. in Melbourne Australia is having an exhibition at the "Metro" Gallery (the old meat market) starting tomorrow. It runs until 14th March. There are some excellent pieces and the workmanship is high even if we are on the other side of the world.

Lissa:I go to a wonderful chat for quilters. There is always someone there to chat with. Anything like that for beaders? I beaded a little in high school-chokers on a little loom. Now I have discovered off loom, and love it!A gap of 3 decades, but what matter?

Lissa: - ip-26-108.phx.primenet.com - Saturday, February 27, 1999 at 19:45:16 (EST)
Helen: My pleasure! No, I'm not the host, just a common participant. Pete Francis, the Director of the Center for Bead Research and author of "Beads of the World" is the host. He is currently romping around the world at the moment, but checks in when he can. If you've got questions about the scholorly aspect of beads and their history, he's the man. I on the other hand am a housewife from Phoenix who has been beading for about 5 years now. I've tried my hand at most of the currently popular techniques, and have a pretty good clue as to where to go on the web or at the bookshelf for more information.

Lissa: I appreciate your help. Are you the host of this room?

Lissa: - ip-26-108.phx.primenet.com - Saturday, February 27, 1999 at 17:24:02 (EST)
Helen:Yup, I go bottom to top, and usually right to left. My kindergarten teacher must be rolling in her grave. :)
Vicky: My pleasure! If you come up with any other ways to deal with those threads, please let me know. One other method is to ditch the loom entirely, and do the work in square stitch. It takes longer, but is much stronger, and *no warp threads*.
tiara: This is really more like a bulliten board. Unless you set a time to meet, you aren't likely to actually run into a live body. But several of us check here periodically, and post our answers.

hi anyone here?

Vicky: - qncyb106-15.splitrock.net - Friday, February 26, 1999 at 15:14:28 (EST)
Lissa Thank you

Helen: - spider-tm071.proxy.aol.com - Friday, February 26, 1999 at 12:38:26 (EST)
Lissa: Do you work a chart bottom to top? That seems to be the easiest, although books seem to show top to bottom. I am making Dona Anderson's "The Scream" for my daughter.

Lissa: - ip-26-021.phx.primenet.com - Friday, February 26, 1999 at 10:02:57 (EST)
Helen: No problem. It took me a bit to get my mind around the fact that you don't start with the end bead of each row on your chart, but must move over one bead on the chart each time you start a new row. I really do either draw a diagonal line or put an extra dot in each circle that marks the starting bead in a row on my chart--it makes it easier for me to keep track of where I am.

Helen: - spider-tl023.proxy.aol.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 20:58:03 (EST)
Lissa: Thank You! It's even count. I have Creative Bead Weaving and just need to practice, I guess.

Lissa: - ip-26-169.phx.primenet.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 19:11:13 (EST)
Helen: There are even tubular peyote instructions at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Oracle/1395/beadwork.html

Lissa: - ip-26-169.phx.primenet.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 19:06:27 (EST)
Helen: Are you doing odd count or even count tubular peyote? Odd count will simply spiral up and around what you are doing--there is no step up. I've never tried to graph it, but I suspect it would be difficult. For even count peyote, you pass your needle through the first bead of the row you just finished, then add the first bead of your new row. The first bead of every row moves one bead over. You can draw a diagonal line on your graph to keep track of where you are. I suggest you try the book "Creative Bead Weaving" by Carol Wilcox Wells or "Beaded Amulet Purses" by Nicolette Stessin for some good directions. I also recall seeing some instructions on the web, but I can't place my finger on where just now.

Helen: - spider-tk052.proxy.aol.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 19:03:44 (EST)
Is anyone here?

Lissa: - ip-26-169.phx.primenet.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 18:56:10 (EST)
Vicky: There are a couple of different things you can do with those threads. If you are going to attach your beadwork to something else (like leather, or a ribbon), put some scotch tape on the ends and tuck them under your work. Quick and dirty. You can also snip each thread long enough to weave back into your work--this is probably the most professional and time consuming method. I understand if you warped your loom in one continuous thread that you can carefully pull the warp threads through your work until you are left with one long thread at each end of the work. I've never gotten this to work though--I always pierce my warp threads as I am doing the weaving. If you have used strong enough warp thread, you can string beads on the warp to make fringe, or can simply knot the threads together as part of the design. My personal preferred method is to weave some actual fabric at each end of the bead weaving with my thread, and coat this half inch of fabric with FrayCheck--then once it drys snip off the remaining warp threads, tuck the fabric under the beadwork, and tack it down. For more beadwork information, try the book "The Illuminated Beading Manuscripts Book II The Loom" by Delinda Vannebrightyn Amura

Helen: - spider-wb022.proxy.aol.com - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 14:15:08 (EST)
I'm doing my first tubular peyote. How do I step up? If I move one bead left on every row doesn't my design get distorted?

Vicky: - qncyb210-16.splitrock.net - Thursday, February 25, 1999 at 10:58:13 (EST)
what do you do with the threads that were attached to the loom, say if you wanted to make a bracelet with you work? Do you know what i mean, the threads that are hanging of your bead project.

Theresa -- I am not sure about a dated photo. Today for text all you have to do is produce it and be able to date it; it is automatically copywrited. With designs different rules probably apply. For dating, you might send the photos to yourself via certified mail.

Martha -- Have you looked at the articles and links under Bead People from the home page of thebeadsite.com?
Steve --Neither Early Dynastic nor New Kingdom Egyptian beads would be expected in Mali. Nothing (as late as) the Roman period has ever been found south of the Hoggar (in Algeria).
Milo, Ubud and several of its associated villages makes sterling silver beads. Yogyakarta is supposed to be another, even better price-wise source. Thailand can also do fantastic work.

Cathy, sorry this is late reply but better than none at all, 1st I am in Australia. 2nd The Shepherdess does not have a web site but they are on e-mail I think - they advertise in the bead and button magazine.

Now who was looking for sterling beads? These are made in the islands of Indonesia, I can't think of the name of the place at the moment, it is on the island of Bali, but recently read an article and I think filed it away. They are called Bali Beads, someone also advertises them in the bead & button mag.

Hi: We were in Western Africa in 1993 and purchased a string of beads in Timbuckto, Mali. From looking at a book, History of Beads by Dubin, it appears that a number of the beads are steatite and garnet from the Early Dynastic period in Egypt or carnelian from Old Kingdom period. Any ideas how to confirm this and have them appraised?

Thanks Della, will try further out in the flame, I am only working on a propane bottle and a hot head (limited tools out here).

Cathy's When in the US last year I found a large supply of very tiny antique beads at "The Shepherdess" in San Diego.

Barbara Think I saw a pattern for this either in Bead & Button or Beadwork in the last 12 months, will look when I get home tonight. Anyway if you have a crossstitch pattern you can use it for brickstitch or pyote

Pete, Do you know of any museums in Ireland that display beads from the 12th century or earlier? I'm particularly interested in glass beads and would like to take pictures of the beads.

korzo: I know you can find some of Liza Lou's work at http://www.netVIP.com/smmoa/03b.html, and if you do a search on her name you will turn up more. As to origins, development and uses, could you be a tad bit more specific? There have been beads just about as long as there have been people. Start with the book "The History of Beads" for background, and check out http://www.mcs.net/~simone/beadnet.html for links to bead information on the net. Could you narrow your work down in time and area?

Cindy: I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you want to make a gecko out of pony beads, like the beadie buddies? Or stitch one out of seed beads? Or something else?

beatrice: Try Pete's book "Beads of the World", as well as "Beads: An Exploration of Bead Traditions Around the World" by Janet Coles and Robert Budwig, and "The History of Beads" by Lois Sherr Dubin. All three are in print--if your library doesn't have them, the bookstore should.

Cathy S: Try BeadCats at http://www.beadcats.com/ . I know they carry the small ones down to about a size 24.
