"Carnelian" is the preferred spelling among gemologists. It is the spelling used by Beck and by modern English gemologists. The group within the quartz family is the fibroius microcrystalline group properly known as chalcedony. A subclass of chalcedony is agate and a subclass of agate is carnelian, not the other way around.
